For better or for worse, I also tend to think of the "tube buffer" as a gimmick. I wonder if one of our readers has an idea, what are the benefits of the tubes used in this case? Why not a discrete version of the op amp, or just a decent modern op a...

That was my point, that the only way to know what any amp can do with LF is to actually produce that LF, and I was asking if the 2X 8" woofers you heard gave you any idea. However "efficient" big LF drivers are they are still tough loads for SETs I h...

Ideally, you'd want to drive 35 feet of balanced interconnect with the low impedance source ( say below 150 ohms or so). How low depends upon interconnect capacitance. You can try Jensen output transformer to convert SE to Balanced at the phono-stage...

Not sure if the big Tesla Powerwall batteries are Li (I suppose they are), but the best battery I've actually tried is a big dry cell, best because it can (apparently) survive and continue to function indefinitely just sitting there for months on end...
Did you try just for test to increase the caps value that short the plate to ground? Will it amount and the character of the noise change?
Just like one would expect: 0.1uF shorting cap gives approx 4x more ham than...

In my situation there is a missing link between my single ended phono stage and my balanced active crossover. Between them is 35ft. of interconnect. The missing link is indicated with "?" in the sketch. What I need is one single-ended input, some atte...

I never had a chance to play with various preamplifiers in a very high-resolution system, but all the attempts that I've made with my system at home are constantly returning the same result - passive linestages seems to be the most accurate one....

May I at least ass-u-me that you plan to high pass these horns? If so, go ahead and figure that in, too. In any case, just looking at 70', impedance is not the only number you'll be running up, and the last place you want this load is for LF chan...

did you (or anybody else ) by any chance try Erno Borbely discrete op-amp based buffers? They are J-fet based kits from EU , not as expensive as Placette but not quite cheap either . Regards, L...

Yes, you might be on something in here. Although I used the best possible coupling caps of large values but still from point of view LF it was never “there”, even close. I also played with regulations and PS and sumized that the PS were not the reaso...

Like I said, musical bass via the TAP does not thin out at all before my BR bins roll it off; but that's as much as I can say at this point. And (against conventional logic) the TAP certainly does much better bass than any active LS I...
I have brought the Placette Active Linestage back into the room.
This comparison is proving more difficult than anticipated. Inconsistent results between subject tracks have given me some doubt on just what I have been h...

Well, if you do not have anything user 35Hz and have low sensitivety then the passive might do. Still in future, when you feel comfortable with your passive unit you might for the sake of self-education try an following experiment: Guy Hummel use to ...
Yes, I have thought about it. My Placette has no tape loop but I think it needs to be added. It is shame that I did not think about it before – it would save me some cable not to mention an ability to run A/D from anyt...

The worsening quietly of Metropolitan broadcasts is not a secret to anyone but did anyone notice that those hoodlums this session become even more obnoxious. Now the MET FM broadcasts are not live anymore but they are A/Ded, then come to some kind of...

Please do not get the idea that I ever "ruled out" active pre-amps or came to the TAP through some sort of object worship. I really couldn't care less about how the job gets done. Active is fine, as long as the results are there...

Preamplifiers: keys to mystery – or…. how a preamp might be not only a load-driving gadget.
Years after years the preamplifiers are being a “terra incognito” of audio people. I admit that preamps are a subject of my persistent curiosity. I was alway...

Now that all three are on the same absolute polarity and have been listened to quite a bit I thought it time to write down my impressions. From least preferable to most:
