Yep, the Toscanini performance was a big surprise to me as well. Interestingly he does not play it as I would like Buckner generally, it is too “artistically expressive”, good only for Rimsky-Korsakov or Ravel but… still the way how Toscanini’s orche...

Thanks for the compliment Romy - nice forum site you have here !!Yes, you really must hear the Tintner 7th - a very special performance, not just the opening. If I could only keep two 7ths I think it would be the Matacic 1967 & the Tintner....

Yes, I do know what you mean about Asahina. I have DVDs of a Brahms symphony cycle - 4 is good (not wonderful), 2 not bad, 3 is just plain boring (and it is one of my favourite symphonies). I haven't gotten around to 1 yet - t...

The last week Ozawa returned in Boston after 6 years of thanks God escape from BSO. He played Olivier Messiaen "Trois Petites Liturgies de la Presence Divine" and Berlioz's "Symphonie Fantastique". I am not a highe Ozawa fun but I have to admit the B...

This is in interesting Bruckner. Asahina plays this 9 in 2000 like someone would play Brahms. While I was listening it I did not think about the music but about audio. This Tokyo orchestra realty does not have “it”, even though I do like what A...

Well, this was why I used the “amateur” in the quotes. Amateurism described as a pursuit to something without formal qualification or professional status. Surely Günter Wand was not a sub-qualified person and he was a professional conductor but as a...
Tintner's is quite possibly my favourite opening of the 7th - hushed, mysterious, tremulous and Oh, so atmospheric. Wonderful sound quality too!
Well, eventually I got a civilized person reading this site.
