Fremer has just pitched these in the new Stereophile, and the online buzz is building.  Isn't D'Agostino the Krell guy?  If these are different than the Krell amps, then how and why?  Disclosure: I quickly dismissed the Krell offerings during my own 2012 big amp search.  Of course, part of the problem with choosing "high end" amps is hearing around the "high end" ancillaries...

So, do these sound like they look?

Yes, it looks like Mr. D'Agostino went his own way with his own products. It is common nowadays, good for him. IT is hard to predict if his new amps would be different in sound from Krell. Krells were generally very bad, not because they were “badly designed” but because they supporting very ugly taste in Sound. Do not ask me why. The new D'Agostino might be the same and might be different; I incline to believe that it will be different.

Unfortunately, or fortunately I have absolutely no interest to learn about it as I have no use from high power amps. I personally feel that for my needs a direction of Mr.Pass with his First Watt project is more lucrative. Who needs another 300W amp into 8R? To drive the speakers that need 5V just to produce any auditable sound?

Pass's SIT-1, however, seems as close to your philosophy as any SS device can get, being "D-SETable" though Pass does not advocate its use in that way.

Not only ULF, and not only the usual "dead" audiophile drivers, and not just raw amp power.  My experience suggests that direct radiator drivers from 10" diameter and under claimed "100 dB efficiency" (and - especially - in multiples) can benefit from an amp of this sort.  Guesses as to why abound, but it seems to have to do with the amp's ability to interface with the motor(s), including reactive loading and the reciprocal "weight" of the drivers' physical and electrical "mass".  Sure, there are other strategies for amp/driver interaction, but amps like this one can be implemented to better effect than typical salon/audiophile installations suggest.

Setting aside cost/benefit considerations, and setting aside the norms in terms of sound yields, there is nothing wrong and lots right with working power, per se, as a concept.  And who knows, these might just make someone's Alexandrias sound their best...

I had tears in my eyes (I am sensitive), yes, that is modern High-End.

Atki shouldn't be so nervous, that's normal, Agostino Designs sound best before they burn....it won't hurt when you have one or two Fire extinguishers in your room while listening :-)
I don't understand why he moved on, normally he had to give the amps back. When other brands pass his tests and here he ignores it, then I ask myself, for what are his tests good for?

I guess:  Recommended Components Class A+

What's really funny about this is that Atkinson actually mentions that normal Al fins in lieu of the copper-boxes-with-copper-tubes "heat sinks" would probably handle the heat effectively.  Of course, then the amps would not look like they do...

One also wonders if the giant meter ultimately impinges on audible performance.

But what do you expect for 55k???

The serious punter will opt for the DarTZeels...
