no- there's no reason why it wouldn't make sense NOT to give 'er a crack-- at worst, i wouldn't like the results!i guess the difficult part really is sorting out measurement vs. hearing- tricky at best! trying to assemble sense from possi...

romy- i have resisted using RTA for the very reasons you're citing-- learning to read the visual data, as well as methods of how to get it accurately, are as equally time consuming as any other pursuit in audio. anyone can be a reade...
thanks for the responses doc and romy-much food for thought- but what i'm thinking, or at least extrapolating from what you're saying is that the possibility exists that i AM measuring what i think im' measuring.i have a good friend who is very...

hey romy and all-i recently came across a strange phenomenon (to me.. maybe not to everyone else!).I just started using RTA as a method of evaluating my results with my own 2 way speaker system, and I'm finding that I'm ending up liking the sound of ...

Romy-In this thread, you previously said--12) If a
filter requires a phase inversion then it is preferable to flood
crossover point with amplitude and do not invert phase. What exactly do you mean by this and how's it work?thanks-d....
what a great idea-- i never really thought of a sort of 'low pass bypass' inductor of sorts?! i'd always assumed that inductance was similar to capacitance in that regard-- the more you add, the more you get-- but hadn't thought about the...
hm..lots of interesting information to chew on, and by and large, i've had similar experiences with first order crossovers on bass drivers .. this being my experience with a full range amp, and a two way system-- which is a far different critter than...
yep-- i always measure first to get as close as i can get to a matched set (within a % or 2 at least!). luckily, for this application, i got 4 extras.. so i should be able to get close, and for all the sub- 1uF caps i have around for all the ot...
it must've been my time-- i just tripped across a batch of 20 1uF vitamin q 100vdc caps for $4!it's a lot of soldering... but for $4? i bit...thanks all!d....
hmm..well.. duelunds.. they ARE mortgage lifters! i think i'd be more likely to hunt down old vitamin q's for a few months while settling though... i did try solens-- and while they were a revelation by comparison to absurdly overrated voltage...
yep-- i could tell from the minute i stuck them in they were a no go... the foil is WAY too thick.i've used what i've been able to track down via ebay, and other nefarious means-- so those came in a lot of other lower voltage caps-- all in the 1-200v...

mixing those two seems to bring out some of the best of both, so far!the capacitor (or two, as the case may be) is an 8uF combo- 2 4uF caps-- one VQ, one hovland musicap. i HAVE 8uF of vitamin q, but unfortunately, one 4uF is a 400VAC, th...
heres a question for the lot of you-due to general lack of many available capacitors in my shop-- i recently mixed both film AND oil caps to pull together a necessary value for a passive crossover. the GOOD of it, is that it takes away some of ...
hey jessie-I've wondered the same thing-- and the more i end up twiddling around with it, the more I think it really either comes down to good measurements, or good listening! And in fact.. probably both in conjunction!I have a small 2 wa...
now THAT is the kind of instruction in critical listening that gives you some real guideposts for making your system sound right! romy, i believe you have honestly set a new standard... i have a 2 way system, so i can't use the exact instr...
speaking what you really think is often percieved as arrogance.. so i wouldn't worry about that, and i wouldn't take offense at somebody who's worked on their system extensively (even with similar drivers) speaking their mind. kinda the point o...
fair enough- you're absolutely right, i didn't!it's difficult to get that perspective on sonics without legitimate guideposts-- even with a lifetime of playing and recording music, it's difficult to know what the parameters of recorded sound ar...

the sad truth was the space, the finite funds, and the available bms pucks! the sad truth also, i suppose, the lack of available, and sensitive horn users to bounce off of!i could probably see what your dislike of the bms stems from-- i tried to...
agh..well.. i can see that you'd never be over for a beer and listen session, romy! not that i wouldn't invite a curmudgeon such as yourself.. but my own system might not make the cut!i just finished off a little 2 way bms/altec system (and i d...

i definitely see what you're saying there.. but i do wonder if it has more to do with the economics and the powers that be than a full on case of negligence. most sound engineers-- or at least those i've known (and not the bastard species of fa...

i certainly know a lot of 'audiophiles' with a vast array of gear-- some good, some bad -- but i think there are a variety of reasons people are so confused about what constitutes good sound.one of the most heinous- outside public opinion- ...
