Nope, I am much larger, much bolder and much more obnoxious. I told that I never heard/seen your horns. In fact I thought that this installation was in your home or in a home of your close associate as the systems uses your steam-locomotive-shape amplifiers.

Nah ,I don't think
that Romy exist at all. Nobody really saw him nor heard his system. Information is scarce and coming almost exlusively from The Cat himself. Personaly, I suspect that "Romy" is a collaborative effort of sadomasicist who run Audio Asylum .It is some satanic scheme beyond my comprehension.

I hope you understand where I am coming from.

Tuga,

it getting turned into the angeloitacare-level of posting. The entire idea of this thread was to innumerate the sources of horns makers:

 Romy the Cat wrote:
I constantly contacted by the visitor of my site and some people that I know me in my none-internet life inquiring me who could build horns. Ironically, despite the simplicity of the task, if a person has a clear idea what he is willing to accomplish I his horn then s/he has is insultingly limited number of masters who could accommodate custom requirements and to build the horns at the demanding level of quality. Most of the horn makers try to make the cookie-cuter horns, unfortunately not the best cookie-cuter horns…. What is more unpleasant is that when a customer has some specific requirements that do not comply with the manufacturers cookie-cuter visions then the manufacturers begin to load on the customers all imaginable BS, deception and lying trying to convince the customer that the customer own vision should not be even considered.

So, who cold build the real tailored horns? Please post names, contact information or if you are a horn builder then please direct advertise here.

None of the manufactures you named over custom horns of sell separate horns, so it become more look like horn porn site. There is really no need to do it.

It seems like they are ending their sale of horns to the DIY community. Also, some people say that www.azurahorn.com are closing down. Not good news!

Which brings a very interesting subject: a huge failure of horns-industry to shape the horn-loading concept as a product. Pay attention that there is no successful horn-loading venture targeting home use that developed a vision of horn-loading where purchasing of horn would be juts tool or a mean in accomplish a much deeper task. Instead the horn makers ether target the ignorant and mostly low-demands pubic, the pubic that is clueless what to do with horns. Alternatively the horn makers feed foolish fuel to fire of different  idiotic cult s– the cult that mostly are at the same level of ignorance as the ignorant pubic. There is no conceptualized view of horn-loading installation (beside  my Macondo concept) that industry has developed and therefore for most of uninformed people just buying the “horns” is as useful as for me buying a or a trombone.  I hope that sometimes someone would pop up with development of the horns field instead of development of individual and in most cases irrelevant or faulty products. I would be very embracive of some kind of “interesting” horn company would show up and attack the horn project full-time.

Stereo lab continued

Stereo Lab, to whom Romy drew attention at the beginning of this thread, offer their products on Ebay at what seem to be reasonable prices. See here (http://stores.ebay.co.uk/Stereo-Lab)

Looks like the small horns are made of artificial stone, whereas the larger ones are combinations of fibreglass and artificial stone.

Romy, do you think their "Lowther" 140 Hz horn, seen here,

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Spheric-Wave-Tractrix-Horn-cf140hz-Stereo-for-Lowther_W0QQitemZ190202066763QQihZ009QQcategoryZ22062QQcmdZViewItem

may be used as an upper LF channel?  There seems to be quite enough room to play with in the rear chamber and the throat size seems big enough, even if it is not specified.

Yes but.
They have a 17cm throats so in most cases it is better to get the version with 2" throat for compression drivers, shorten them for the right throat size and build a chamber yourself.

Horn maker reply

Hi Romy,

Unfortunately I have never arrived at a fully integrated horn system - but I have mostly enjoyed the attempt.  I think those who buy my horns (Azurahorn) are, like me, working on the deeper task.  I actually keep a low profile so as not to encourage demand - I enjoy making horns occasionally for the intrepid few - but dont really have the time.

I came over here to look for advice on mid bass horns.  I have found what you say on the subject to be entirely true - it encourages me in a way to find out what is going wrong with mine (you can see it on azurahorn.com) . Sorry I missed the thread while it was going on.

Thanks and best wishes,  Martin

Talking about commercialization of the upperbass horn

Hi, Martin,

As I understand you are the AU guy who makes horns? I heard a lot about you, very welcome, it would be very interesting to hear your experienced…

I agree with you: what I say on the subject to be entirely true. :-) However, talking about the upperbass horn there is more “complicated” fish to fry. Talking about upperbass horn or the midbass horns we need to differentiate who would be the user of the horn. If we do the horns for ourselves or to the “specially” paid customers then it is OK and we could go for the “right ways” to make upperbass. However, what we are trying to abstract even a successful upperbass horn’s idea into a series commercials products then it becomes to be very unattractive, as the majority of the properly made upperbass expenses are in the completely invisible  for consumer area…

Nothing is missed. The formant of this format is that nothing is missed and any worthy subject might be reinstated and continued.

New Old horn-maker in US
fiogf49gjkf0d

It looks like a new horn maker wanted to be know: the Eleven Horns

http://www.elevenhorns.com/welcome.htm

"... so.. what is a junkie?   well, I guess an example is the best way to explain...  between the two of us, we own a few drivers - Western Electric, TAD, Altec, Goto, ALE, RCA, Radian, B&C, Coral, etc, etc... and not being entirely satisfied with any of them, we are now on the long, enjoyable journey to making our own.. patent papers everywhere... busted drivers... sliced diaphragms... spliced surrounds... oh, horns.. sorry about that.. yes, and we each have the ability to make any horn flare we want.. they litter our workshops... and we both agreed on a precious few -  those depicted here... so beware, like any junkie, we want to share... if only because it allows us to feed the habit... "

http://www.elevenhorns.com/ordering.htm

The company makes mostly Le Cleac'h horns or as I call them the “Le-Horns” (sorry, Mr. Le Cleac'h – I have difficult time to spell your name). The prices are all right and their attitude to make any custom job need to be welcomed.  Looking at the people behind the company it looks like it was Victor Sierra’s attempt to give a face lift to his old company.  Generally it is a good sign – the more horn makers the better.

Now some minor criticism. Obviously they need to develop their site. They need to put in there interesting IDEAS of horns systems, not just the gayishly-glossy pictures of a few Le-Horns. The horns in there look fine but all that “fine look” will go away after the first textured paint. Then, Victor Sierra lives and make his horns at some kind of island in ocean. It was known that some of his horns were turned with “wet” wood that dried out then at the customer side with some very unhappy consequences. So, it might be a good idea to have from Victor unfinished horn, have it to dry for a few month and then to finish it.

I think if people are looking and truing to solicit themselves as horn makers than they need to offer more than juts expertise to turner horn and to dip them into polyurethane. Horns themselves do not responsible for Sound, they juts a stupid brainless tool. Unfortunately the stupidity of audio people that Eleven Horns target is so high that even if they turn horn from mammoth’s bones then it would not be an assurance that people will be able to use the Le-Horns beneficially.

Will the Eleven Horns become as a some kind of new center of horn turning in US? It is hard to say. Jeffrey Jackson is behind the project from the US side (probably as a reseller). He is an interesting fellow with potent ideas but who will be the new customers?  10 year ago Brice Edgar’s shop was THE place for US horns. Brice is a talented and knowledgeable guy but who was his customers? They were explicitly audio bottom-eaters and the audio- douchebag of all strains.  Will, the Eleven Horns nurture their own breed of horn users? I do not think so, but I wish them luck.  So, far from what they have expressed at this site I do not see any offensive intent.

No-nonsense Bentwood Horns from Canada.
fiogf49gjkf0d
I made a few calls to a few horn makers with a perspective to build for me a substitute for the horrible Altec 19 horn.  While talking with people I was given an interesting lead about the guy that I did not know. He is a Canadian and his name is Andrew. He is not a Burger Kind type of horn-sweatshop. He built horns for himself and does it for occasional customers. He does not advertise, no involved with any groupies or interests coalitions. He is private parry who can make horns. He makes only rectangular horns and his prices are reasonable.

I have 10 min conversation with Andrew. How many times I concluded that this or that audio person was idiots juts after a few minutes of conversation?  Ironically with Andrew I had absolutely no need to show of attitude as there was absolutely nothing BS, showy or just plain stupid in his wards – a very seldom quality in audio person. The guy knew exactly what I need, knew how to do it and passed as few comments that indicated that he has bra and know how to use it, also a very seldom quality among audio manufacturers. Andrew sounded relaxed and confident – a very pleasant feeling and I am kind of sorry that am not ready to proceed with my Cetla Ledom project now.

http://www.bentwoodhorns.com/

Anyhow, here is another Horns maker who is very open for custom projects. I have no idea what he does and how good what he does but the initials sentiment of mine is very positive. If I go for that 33 by 11 Cetla Ledom MF my own custom horn then I think I will recruit Andrew, but I have no decision ye it is will be THIS type of horn…
