I agree about Solti's Bruckner -- with the one exception of the 6th symphony. Solti's no-nonsense precision works wonders for me in that symphony, and it is I think my favourite version....

Yes, a great Bruckner conductor - but also a very fine composer in his own right. I have a couple of CDs of Andreae's own music, both on the Swiss label Guild. The string quartets are fine, but very special indeed are the piano trios. Highly disti...

Two minutes for a self-contained sketch ... then onto the next hit! And then the next ... and the next .... Whoa! - exciting stuff. But Bruckner isn't like that - he is in it for the long haul, for the gradual deep development. The spaciousness ...

Although I am a Brit and have been an avid fan of classical including British music (RVW is my fave) for several decades, I just haven't been able to appreciate what the hell Elgar was on about in his 2 symphonies. (I've loved his '3rd' as completed...

For many years my favourite performer for the Sibelius has been Christian Ferras. He has a DG recording with Karajan, and also there is a DVD-Video performance with Mehta. In both, his interpretation is very similar - if you want to experience icy ...

Very amusing and also so very true. I can recognise all 7 of those phases in me. Although to be absolutely fair, I still buy too many recordings to "take the time to enjoy every one" so I haven't quite achieved the fullness of the 'Maturity' phase....
.... but I never was attracted to Sibelius’s Symphonies. But here it was a totally other story. The Firth and Seventh ISymphony plated by Boston Symphony in 1975 under no other then Colin Davis, with Firth probably be more...
I played earlier the disgusting Zenph "re-performance" of Gould's Goldberg Variations. This, by the way was the worst performance of the week! Where is the music?!? Why did they do it?
It's ye...

I can tolerate 2nd rate playing in great performances. I find that a great conductor playing with a 2nd or even 3rd rate orchestra can produce excellent music - and a 2nd or 3rd rate conductor with a great orchestra can produce horrible or just...

I must admit that in general Britten is one of my least favourite Brit composers - I really just do not usually get on with his musical language. But the violin concerto is a very honourable exception - I guess because it has so many similarities with...
What in interesting work, sort of piano concerto but so much different…. and so much fascinating!!! It is played by Howard Shelley and BBC National Wales Orchestra under Richard Hickox… The Cat
I've not heard that -...

Symphonies 1 to 4 by Herman Koppel have come my way over the last week or so .... 20th C Scandinavian. Kind of a cross between Sibelius, Vaughan Williams & Hindemith .... with a touch of minimalism way ahead of its time. &nb...

A thread for recent personal discoveries of any recording, or just recent recordings? ....Anyway, this counts as both .... well, 1998, so not that old!.... Pergolesi Stabat Mater conducted by Rinaldo Alessandrini on the Naive label - Naive OP30441.I ...

Thanks for the recommendation, Romy, I've just ordered the Bohm disc from Amazon Market Place - less than £3 delivered!A Mozart clarinet concerto recording that is unusual and worth looking out for is by the Managing Director (CEO) of the Musical Fid...

I've just spent a happy couple of hours listening to some Debussy solo piano - started off with Gieseking but after a while became a little impatient with the rather thin sound quality. I switched to my complete set of Debussy piano by Go...

Oh, and the sound is surprisingly good! 1953 and 56 mono.Jerry, unfortunately you heard “wrong” Gieseking. The real Gieseking is the Gieseking before the WW2, in 20s and 30s. Afte...

Well, my Great Recordings of the Century EMI CD has arrived of the Opp 53, 57, 109 & 110 piano sonatas by G. It's almost reversed what I expected to hear in that, from what I have heard of his reputation, I would have expected him to ...

Thanks for the recommendations, Romy. And for the warning about the Mengelberg Rach3 - several of those are available cheap! One composer you have not mentioned is Beethoven ..... so I have bought 1 CD of early sonatas and 1 CD of late sonatas.&...

To my shame, I don't think I've ever heard any of his recordings.I tend to be put off by 'old sound quality' .... but can someone recommend a good CD or two of Gieseking?...

I know that many music lovers venerate Schuricht - a friend of mine in the USA does and he has shared many recordings with me. I try to listen, but I find almost everything of his bland and uninteresting. I think that says far more ...

Schuricht? Pah, no, not for me. Mediocre, bland, boring - gong nowhere from nowhere. Just my opinion ;-) Yes, the VPO is an infinitely better 'Bruckner orchestra' than Nanut's Ljubliana grou...

We both appreciate a big Class A amp! ...

A nice pic of Lara and one of my newly acquired Quad 57 esl speakers....

I've not heard the Scherchen so I cannot comment on that. But of the many other recordings of this wonderful work that I have heard my favorite is definitely Karl Bohm and the VPO on DG. Available on CD and DVD in good quality stereo. (I h...

I have an EMI DVD of Jochum conducting Bruckner 7. Orchestre National de France, played in the Theatre de Champs Elysees, Paris, France, on 6th February 1980.The performance is very special. The opening especially is pretty much perfect!Y...

Perhaps we mean different things by the word 'accident'. For me, an accidently great piece of art would be if I painted things at random on a canvas and it 'accidentally' turned out to be identical to a masterpiece by Rembrandt. Pure chan...

Yep, I do not like the rest of the Nanut Mahler at all. That Mahler 6 I think was a big accident….
The caT
Hmmm ... nor do I.I don't think Nanut's superb Mahler 6 was an accident though. ...
