The epithet I learned, long ago, was "Prince of Darkness". I was of course thinking of that when I wrote the note.Back in the late Sixties I had a British boss, name of John Hardy, who once remarked, "The British really know how to build a great car....

"Please refrain from commenting on that which you do not know."Ah HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH! [His loudest, most raucous rattling laugh.]That would shut down the whole frikkin' Net!Regarding reliability, that's certainly a reason...

Scriabin 1
Scriabin 2
Scriabin 3 + Poem of Ecstasy

That is the correct issue. I ordered a small quantity a while back so I'd have spares for friends, and believe I have that one inter alia. I recall paying something like $21 each, landed.clark...

Your statement that "If a capacitor can hum, it is faulty and is wound incorrectly" is a legitimate point of view.
More of a truism I'd say. Thanks, PP, for elucidating these parameters.clark...

...I heard only the one (Romy's) unit at Bill's. Your descrip of the sound stage reminds me of that one peak day we had at The Listening Studio, so long ago....

...once again listening outpaces measuring. Still, the measurements are good to have.As I know all three of you who have these units, I am totally inclined to accept your results -- and put a PP on my want list.clark...

I'm (re)discovering this cycle, the only one performed by an Austrian orchestra. The Seventh is grand!clark...

Methodological “CLEANNESS” is difficult to achieve. As the co-designer of several sets of tests involving several actual astronauts (this was some time ago), one had to do it right owing to their busy schedules. So thinking-it-through really counted....

"We should not out of hand dismiss a solution which has not been tried, tested and found wanting by anyone who has contributed to this sure never-to-end thread."How can that be argued with?clark...

... yes... just sayin'... there's more to power supply than the AC input."If the power supply output ain't pretty, neither is the sound generally."Audio electronics operate off DC. The conversion process from AC to DC has its own sonic consequences. ...

Thanks for an eminently sensible post -- one that could be inserted into almost any audio discussion thread! Especially:I fail to see the utility... of opinions, approaches or theories which make some dogmatic assumption based on limited experience w...

Never met one such!I can't help but think, however, that turntables should employ batteries....

That's what I get for not reading the thing very far in....

Yes, each piece of gear would seem to require its own unit. But they probably deliver enough juice for a tubed preamp or the like.clark

It's a newish device, the website reads intelligently, and "We’re so confident in the sonic benefits you’ll experience using Black Lightning Battery Power Supplies that we offer our 30-day money-back guarantee."http://www.redwineaudio.com/products/bl...

Something I think you guys are leaving out is power factor. This electricity stuff is not linear; voltage peaks do not necessarily track current. This is a problem with Edison supply, and perhaps a greater one with local generation. There are devices...

Guy, gotta tell you this story. At a CES perhaps ten years ago, Plinius was showing with some large expensive loudspeakers connected with some heavy expensive cabling. All this was powered by a VERY large generator out behind the Alexis Park, which w...

Conceivably, but most observers here think that GBH would have used that to duck the blame.Still... worth checking.clark...

scades wrote, "NPR has no say about WGBH's operations." That's a lovely assertion, but naive to the extreme. And it presumes insider knowledge. The producer of PHC is American Public Media, as well as of Symphonycast and many other musical programs; i...

Channel 4 may handle CBS programming, but is it "a CBS station"? Yes for the programming, but No for the ownership. CBS does however own several stations outright.WGBH purveys a considerable amount of NPR programming -- in fact they originate a good ...

It looks to me like a most commendable review, with considerable time spent in set-up.
Could there be such a thing as a "mediocre" 9th? Either it's great, or it sucks.
I've heard many plain performances.
As a point of interest, does anyone know of a great recorded performance of the 9th by BSO fro...

While I cannot recollect for certain how the conductors I name take the third movement, I do tend to agree with The Cat here about how it should go. Therefore these recordings may well adhere to that desideratum. The greatest: Walter, NBC SO, 1939. Si...

The right word would have been "truisms". Obvious statements. "Common knowledge." But by no means always true. Often, not!clark...

Personally I think his finest Bach is the set of Partitas.Widening the scope, his single disc of Brahms Intermezzi etc. is nearly incomparable.clark...

For decades I've declared him the Greatest Living American Composer.I was privileged to know him and visit him back in the Eighties and early Nineties. A true gentleman. His two sons followed him in classical music, one as a violinist, the other as a...
