A kind chap from the Lansing Heritige forum has identified my new driver as a 2482. Interestingly those good radian people do an replacement aluminium diaphragm for this driver. What remains to be seen is how big the advantage of the original phenolic...

Looks like it will be a long learning curve...first discovery - I've matched the levels of the jbl vs BMS accurately - and subjectively the jbl sounds 3-5db louder. and much fuller. very healthy sound too.I'm going to take this chance to listen to lo...

Romy,I took your advice and now have a single 2440 driver. At least i THINK its a 2440. On opening it i find that it has a phenolic diaphragm! Have I been sold something else? I was not aware that there were ever any phenolics for the 2440 family. Wa...

Fascinating stuff. I'm certainly going to try to get my
hands on some 2440's when I can see them for a nice price.
That 18 Sound ND2060A
looks very interesting to me. And would fit in with my silly philosophy of only
using currently manufac...

Thanks. It would be interesting to try these. I heard some a while back in a rectangular tractrix and I remember being very impressed. Has anyone had any experiance of these? james...

good point well made. Funny, i have tried to give up coffee many times. sometimes sucsessful even for 6 months at a time. But somehow, life with coffee is just better.Anyhow, what are the 2" comp drivers that ARE any good and are available comerciall...

The surface of my fiberglass horns is quite rough. The mould was sprayed from a distance with some water based paint - so it all landed in fine globules. Maybe this is too fine a rough texture though. I like the idea of thick artists oil paint…

The problem I encounter is that a by its very nature, a pure audio 'it' renders itself invisable. i.e. as soon as my system can do something better - more musical - then this just gets absorbed into the listenbility and is not really an issue any mor...

Ok. I have some very good results to report. I've been stuffing my midrange horn (250hz lecleach with BMS4592nd-midrangeonlyversion) with some 20-hole-per-inch open cell foam. As per Mr. Geddes. Its not coming out. 1. I can now play louder with no sh...

Buy the way, since you discover
“it” in Janacek then did you begin to be more sensitive to the similar
“it” in other composers/compositions?
Of course. I find when I discover a new 'it' - I then find/feel it all
over the place. And as a comple...

Well, I found Janacek strange and unfathomable. I was brought up on
Haydn-Beethoven-Schubert-Brahms-(Mahler)-Schoenberg route... so I had no
entering point for Janacek. I also loved Dvorák and Smetana... but this
was no help either.. (its only now...
|
I also thought this question was kind of idiotic... until I noticed that its really been bugging me for a few weeks...what are the rules for a C20 composer? Died after 1900? If so....I've been fighting between Mahler and Janacek. I can make a waterti...

No, i really did mean a 4592nd midrange - it is a OEM version that I think I bought from assistance audio. There are various reasons I'm crossing over at 3k (more like 2500hz now) - first, the horns are 250hz and therefore too deep for high treble wi...

Romy,Could you help me understand your biasing scheme with this version? I thought I understood the original Milq circuit - but the only channel that looks like that to me is the D channel. I don't get A and B at all! what is the 50 ohm resistor doin...

thought you might like to see my horn construction method - http://picasaweb.google.com/jbjbjbjbjb/115hzHornsI'm about to fibreglass them - hmmm probably not right for this thread..op.9...

I agree, there is probably very little to learn luthiers that is directly applicable. However, I've always been interested in the similarities between good speaker cones and thin lacquerd spruce. Sort of a crispy pingy sound even with just a gentle t...

"It is not an accident that I liked the article about the “Resonating Oops” to this thread."Interesting. I'm just completing my 125hz midbass horns. And I'm deciding how to construct the back chamber. I think I will experiment with a removable and tu...

Romy, is there a problem with the DAC1 file? After 16' there is an audible click then a lowering of level and a much more bleached out sound. (Also the channels are reversed)..Maybe your could check this out..cheersop.9...

Dan, are you using the Behringer DEQ2496 for your RTA? If so, you could
be experiencing the same problem I had. Once in a while its frequency
range goes doolally and shows rubbish - but not quite enough rubbish to
make it obvious. (I think it read...

Thanks, look forward to hearing about your results. I am tempted to make some similar experiments myself - but all I have to hand is some 17.5:1's. I think I'll give it a go anyway...opps9...

Pure Russian music? You have missed out the great master Tanayev! Almost alone, he manages to combine that true Russian sound with our counterproductive western accountantcy....

I chanced upon an interesting PSU arrangement for my 5842. I run a valve regulated powersupply at 210v and then drop down to 160v with an un-bypassed 8uf oilcap. Any more capacitance or bypasses seemed to be a step backwards in terms of pleasure. A n...

Like cv, I've not directly compared mumetal
to amorphous in an OPT position. However, my hunch is that the sonic
attributes are the same as those found at line level (I've tried
various Xformers as the IV/output stage in my Rakk Dac).
I now ru...

I use Sowter model 9550 for my treble horns. (Changing over to these was the biggest single improvement I've ever made). Brain is very good to deal with and will make anything to your specs. He has huge experiance with OPT design.Oneday I want to com...

http://www.audioxpress.com/bksprods/products/kt-3a.htmThere is an interesting review of this machine in last month's audio express magazine. Its still unclear to me exactly what all the different pulses are for. Neveretheless, it sounds very us...

Yes, I agree they are different issues. However, quite a big however too...It all depends on where we believe 'reproduction' starts. We are very rarely simply reproducing the feed form one single microphone. Choices are made very early on in the reco...

One of the dark arts of playing in (and conducting) an orchestra is
the question of judging when to play. This is a huge subject. For
example, often the backs of sections are playing slightly behind anyway
- If you play exactly on the spee...
