I would like to provide an update to my previous post. Sine the Show’s quite positive impression about the Zanden DAC I was looking opportunity to audition it in more or less controlled environment. The best thing would be to bring it in my home but I did not happen, also, the state of my playback nowadays it not were I would need it.
Today I visited guy who had the Zanden DAC and I “happened” had in my car my own DAC (Bidat-JR with output PS). The playback system in context of which the listening took place was not exactly what I consider “interesting” (It was a typical audiophile playback, slightly under $100K all-together and unfortunately the owner of the system listened too many idiots who “suggested” him to many foolish ideas). I did not spend a lot of time to fix the systems it was not my objective. I just brought my D-cable and DAC with intend to swap it with the Zanden and to monitor what would happen.
So, what happen? Whatever happens, and the happenings were VERY drastic, forced me to write this post and to retrieve my exiting comments about the Zanden DAC. Be advised that the Zanden result was WAY beyond any imaginary level where a better d-cable; power cord, better tubes in output state, tweaking or anything else could help. Zanden performed as a laughably crappy DAC (as one of my friends named it: “a typically tube-based DAC”) and I do ask an apology for my initial exiting reaction to the Zanden sound.
The sound in AG’s room at the show was quite good comparing to anybody else at the show but apparently it was so not because of the Zanden but despite of it.
