Post Subject: Kalinnikov First…. by ToscaniniPosted by Romy the Cat on: 12/19/2006

A couple days ago I stopped by at used LP store and came across something that I never heard: Toscanini played the Kalinnikov’s mighty First Symphony. The notes said that It was how Americans decided to demonstrate their “solidarity” with Russians at that time. Sure, fighting Germans was less fan then the war profiteering… So, to keep face US fulfilled its patriotic duties by Lend-Lease…and celebrating anniversary of the Damn Commy Revolution by performing Russians programm.

It was on November 7, 1943 and Arturo Toscanini recorded Kalinnikov First Symphony with NBC orchestra. The sound is not good and Toscanini is not the conductors that would associate with Kalinnikov First. Still the perfomance is very interesting. In particularly it is interesting to observe the triangle with Scherchen and Toscanini on one corner, Svetlanov and Dudarova at other corner and Nicolay Golovanov at the third corner – it is like 3 deferent symphonies…

Well, the only sad is that Mravinsky in his end of the 50 beginning of 60s did not take the Kalinnikov’s First Symphony on. That would be something VERY appealing, though I would like the Kalinnikov’s First to be played by less b/w orchestra…
