Thank you, Paul! Don't want to jinx it, but it seems my son is enjoying music and classical in particular. As a test of speakers after the repair, today we listened together to a life broadcast from Warsaw Philharmonic of Chopin's E-minor concerto with Eric Lu (who won the Chopin competition last year). I cannot comment on the possible sound changes as I had to listen low volume plus I give the speaker some hours to loosen/settle the repair before the critical listening.
I fully agree with the crucial role of the surround, especially in Reds where reportedly it is a continuation of the cone, just thinned down and soaked in their special treatment. I'm actually quite afraid of touching it but had no choice - there was about 70mm full blown crack. I did just the minimal (which was not a bit at the end) to repair the crack but I'm wondering how bad or not would be a gentle re-applying of the original dope to the dried out/delaminated/surface cracked parts of the surround. I'm trying to get some feedback from the Tannoy group.
Yes, ST-50 sounded like too much of HF, ear piercing level (I'm listening near field, about 2m from the drivers). ST-50 has its own built in x-over 12dB/octave, with 3 settings for the sensitivity: 85, 89, 93dB and the x-over point: 14, 16, 18kHz. When firing directly, I crossed at 18kHz and tested all 3 sensitivities: it either gave nothing or was too much with nothing in between. Firing away, its set at 14kHz and 93dB but honestly I cant detect any change if its on or off (it fires into an open space - a kitchen of 8m2)
