A Note from the Author

When Carl Jung was asked whether he believed in God, he replied, “I do not believe. I know.” He did not mean that he had solved God as a proposition. He meant that he had arrived, by means he never fully explained, at a state of consciousness in which the question had stopped behaving like a question. This book is interested in that kind of knowing. Some answers cannot be discovered. They have to be felt. And to feel them, a person must stop lying to himself, which is perhaps the hardest thing any human being is ever asked to do.

On July 7, Gustav Mahler and I were born.

Gustav Mahler was Mahler. I am merely another piece of consciousness trying to declare its presence, perhaps by virtue of this book. But you have a birthday too. It is not a trivial fact. At some point Mahler opened his eyes and found himself here. You did the same; so did I. The rest came later.

I have spent fifty-seven years inside a nervous system that receives too much: grief and tenderness, appetite and fear, and the small lies people tell themselves in order to survive the morning. I did not choose this. I was born to it.

This book is not written from a safe distance. It came into existence through an act of self-burning. I am publishing it on the day I stop being fifty-seven because the version of me that was afraid of his own language has lived long enough.

It is literature: a symphony in fifteen movements, composed from the materials of one life, transformed, rearranged, and reimagined into fiction.

The reader may decide whether the author is a witness, an Idiot, or an idiot.
