Post Subject: I too am never sure that the composer "owns" the workPosted by rowuk on: 5/30/2026
Compositions are created by composers for many different reasons. In the earliest days we had church music (sacred) and everything else (vulgar). Whether the composer had a contract or was just composing to get what was in their heads on paper can not always be proven. In any case, I think that the "period" owns the work and the peculiarities of the composer is something for the musician to get "right". This would be true for a Gabrieli as well as a Shostakovich. Then the composer could be an asshole, communist, nazi and the composition would still hold its value.

I certainly can second the notion that when we complete the picture, a lot more makes sense.
