I remember hearing so much "historical justification" for poorly played Bach in the 60's, and then they moved on to Mozart. It will take more listening, but I think I like the sound and the Music from the Gabrieli Consortium. I found then lost some video of a group "working up" some Gabrieli, and the sonorities were pretty cool. You probably know it. I'll post it if I find it again.

I think you will find that the current historically informed performances do not strain your patience or sense of intonation. The performers now actually do master the instruments. In the 1950s/1960s they were learning how to play them as well as learning how little the composers actually wrote on the score.
