Post Subject: Gould/Goldberg/'81Posted by Paul S on: 4/5/2025
Listened this morning to Gould/Goldberg, 1981, via Sony ‘55/’81/”interview” CD set. This is something that never grows old for me. In fact, it always refreshes me, with new insights and warm reminiscences that lift my spirits for the rest of the day. I put these remarks in The Loudspeakers thread because this is another case where I appreciate The Loudspeakers’ proper scale and clear, comprehensive rendition that offers any number of ways to listen to the performances, as there is plenty of There there through the course of 32 variations, and the sound encourages my involvement. Of special interest to me during this round was the way Gould can speed up or slow down significantly without losing his Musical thread, even when expositions are truly fast or truly slow. His touch ranges from incisive to downright percussive, and this more than partly explains the special sound Gould is well known for. I think it’s more about the playing, but Gould was notoriously picky about pianos, which is also apparent here. Tone, timber and very close-to-real dynamics, apropos, contribute to a rewarding session with Gould’s Bach.
