As i found it somewhat difficult to comprehend whether Romy was discussing two driver or stereo playback, to decrease the confusion over whether we are talking about two channels as woofer-tweeter verses left and right stereo, call woofer-tweeter as drivers and stereo as channels. As add-on, when talking about more than two channels, use multi-channel rather than surround, which Romy dislikes.
As far as two driver problems, I feel that they cannot reproduce complex, loud music for several reasons:
1. the crossover point lies at the far end of what each driver can achieve, so distortion increases.
2. because they are being played at their limits, they will distort the limits frequencies more as they play louder.
3 the materials the drivers are made up of are usually dissimilar to the point where they sound incoherent.
3. higher crossover orders have to be used which adds crossover components the signal which adds distortion and phase anomalies.
4.the driving amplifiers must work harder to pass the signal through the crossovers and control the drivers working at their limits.
5. most of the cabinets on two driver systems are less well constructed thus distort the signal more with their vibrations.
On the other hand, three, four and five way driver systems have their own problems, although they do seem to capture orchestral sound better. Of course, adding multichannel ambiance can overcome many of the two driver limitations.
