Post Subject: Choosing DriversPosted by Paul S on: 5/25/2022
Since no driver is actually full range, driver selection is partly conditioned by how well it plays with the other drivers it will be used with, and - very certainly - the crossovers it will be used with, also baffle shape(s) and size(s), amps(s), and the room. I finally have my new cabinets built, and I am futzing with crossovers now. I am still a ways from listening to completed speakers. For the direct radiators I chose an 18 Sound midrange driver and a BMS LF driver. The working low end of a drivers' range is usually where one establishes efficiency. These 18 Sound direct radiators will run at 95 dB, which (according to my experience) is still "lively" enough without being too "jumpy". There are so many drivers in every line, and they get changed so often, that I used to recommend grabbing anything you take a shine to while you can get it. Now, I have to admit that the speaker has to be developed as a whole, and the drivers chosen accordingly.

Best regrds,
Paul S
