No quibble here! I've been saying this myself for twenty-five years. Nor are shows a solution... quite the contrary!

Maybe, maybe not. I think the Balkanization arose unintentionally with the introduction of "component hi-fi". Previously the big names -- Victor, Philco, Columbia -- offered complete phonographs of various descriptions and prices; when the hobbyist was admitted into the game, the result I think was inevitable.
The only two well-known companies that offer complete systems today are Naim and Linn.
