At the risk of sounding like a yahoo, can i ask you romy if you have used your PC for internet radio playback. , as opposed to cd or other forms of digital playback ? My cd collection played out of iTunes to my DAC sounds lifeless, pointless. However playing 320kbps internet radio via iTunes into my DAC is very very good. Try LINN radio classical some time and let me know what you think. I will not bore you with the audio terminology but I know the format is doing several things that you look for in your own playback especially in your end of life phonostage discussion.
Just for the techies, i am running iTunes (older version that I prefer) on iMac via ethernet cabe to airport express. I use the airport express to access internet via wifi (wifi turned off on the iMac), a digital cable runs from airport express to DAC.
