Guy,
the Bernstein was OK but I never was warmed nether to his play not to his conducting. Not to mention that his Ravel play always sound to me more like Slav’s dance then the Ravel concerto. Still, I never head Bernstein playing it with Columbia, I know that he did it many times but I have it only with late New York and older Philharmonia Orchestra. Both of them form my prospective are boring.
There are certainly many versions by different people and only Argerich did it a half dozen times. However, as far as I concern there was no one who went deeper into this concerto then my always-beloved Arturo Benedetti Michelangeli. I have him playing it with Ettore Gracis and Philharmonia Orchestra in 1957 and with Celibidache. Michelangeli recorded this concerto with Celibidache a few time with different orchestras and I do not remember now which I have. I have only one and it is beautiful, like anything else that Celibidache did with Michelangeli.
Anyhow, both of the named above Michelangeli’ performances from my point of view live the Bernstein’s performances in a deep dust…
