I would not even argue the fact that that non-classical repertoire is not-interesting crap. Please, do not debate it with me - go to another site and knock yourself out, not here. Still, tonight after listening twice (!!!) my Anton Bruckner's First Symphony I went to my shelf with Jimmy Scott albums, pulled out my favorite -“Haven” and went to a magnificent ride of Jimmy Scott singing.
It is simple and non-sophisticated but the Jimmy Scott phrasing is totally out of this word. Many classical perfumers need to learn from Jimmy Scott HOW to sing “behind the corner”, I wish Fischer-Dieskau would be able to do something like this with Schubert or Schumann…
The sense of rhythm and the VERY idiosyncratic Scott’s phrasing makes it so devilish interesting, almost hypnotizing…
