I continue to be baffled by listeners who are seeking the global ‘good sounding” loudspeaker - the Holy Grail of loudspeaker design. By this I mean the loudspeaker that makes any and all source-material sound good to them. Unfortunately such a thing is not possible to achieve because no loudspeaker can make ALL the bad (as well as the good) source-material sound good.

Interesting that within his quite accurate analyses Earl allowed himself the above quoted “shallowness”. I mean that Earl was very correct naming the issues but the collusions he made form the fact that loudspeaker discriminate material is very wrong. Yes, there are different topological and design methods can accommodate a loudspeaker to be more favoriteable to some type of music. But here is what the fan starts…

Let pretend that the loudspeaker installation is a Holy Grail for a proper reproduction of a complex and seriously performed classical material. What would happen if this installation plays for instance rock-&-roll or some ‘bad’ jazz?  The result might be experienced from this installation by some kind of rock-&-roll lover would be bad for this listener. However, the fact that the result was bad does not say anything wrong about this installation but rather was a great compliment to it. Instead the “bad result” will objectively present this rock-&-roll lover with 2 undeniable sets of facts:

1) Objectively lower musical value of rock-&-roll material; objectively lower performing techniques or rock-&-roll singers and musicians; objectively lower recording techniques; objectively lower orchestration of rock-&-roll material and; objectively lower quality of the musical instruments used for the instrumentation.

2) Inadequacy and wrong expectations of the rock-&-roll listener reference points.

All of is brings us to an observations that the “Introduction” and “Objectives” in the “My Playback” section of my site had a point. The point was the a playback installation should not be “politically neutral” and should act as a filter actively interpreting musicality by embracing better music and better performances (!!!); and to subdue the effectiveness and reproductive impressionism of bad music and bad performing attempts.
