It does not sound as good as the old Vorsetzers to me, and it particularly suffers in comparison to the DuoArt reproductions done by Everest on Harold Powell's 1929 Steinway (also a "D", AFAIK). Sure, the 1909 is nice, but it sounds a little tight the way they are using it.
But maybe that's what we get when we try to keep "perfect time" with DSP?
The first thing that hit me on listening to Zenph's MP3 file is the way the "time" it portrays is only "one dimensional", if you know what I mean. It's as if the notes have no "options" but they are being "forced" into place by some means that has no "concept" of what it's doing.
How's that for a stretch?
It's clean, all right, but I have recordings of Rachmaninof taken from old wax cylinders that sound better to me.
