Ok, I got it yesterday and I really do not like it. I do not know where to start - it is so much off what where Rachmaninoff left it – it just a very different amplitude of talent. With Rachmaninoff each note has beauty, balance, reference to the whole piece, purpose and meaning in context of a given music idea. With this Concerto No 5 the notes and phrases are “sound” but there is nothing to say and the result the concerto sounds like many Nikolai Medtner compositions. From time to time some interesting isolated phrases popup here and there but they direct quotes from Rachmaninoff. As soon they finish the music go back to it’s pointless wondering… I had difficulty to force myself to listen it second time.
