Listening and recording my FM broadcasts I frequently ask myself a question: do I need to cut the 4G file on 2-3 individual files where each cut contains a single musical pieces of the concert or to keep the whole concert uncut as a continuing file…
It is good to have individual performances of separate pieces identifiable by composer. It is easy to catalog and find them however… Here is bit however. Some concerts are so nicely organized that to break them apart ruins some unique fabric of the performing event. It is not to mention that many of the of the FM broadcasts have incredible good announcers (unless it is WCRB) and in many event the good announcers are able to convent a string of 3 independent musical pieces into a very fluent sequence of listening experiences. How is it possible to cut it on parts?! But if not to do it then it is very inconvenient to find the things later on…

I am not accustomed to music files but you try using a media organizer like iview and add keywords like composer, maestro, orchestra, venue, date, radio station, etc.
It's great for photography, why shouldn't it work with music?

fiogf49gjkf0d It is not about cataloging but about cutting the 2-4 hours concerts on parts or not. As far as cataloging I do not like tagging and I prefer juts simple sorting. I store all files in separate folders with the name of file corresponding to the name of folders. I have 3 logical drives: Recording, Opera and Orchestral. I have also a Chamber/Instrumental drive but now it is mixed Orchestral with I file it is very easy to sort the folders by name or by recording data in descending order to find what I need… Here is the last two weeks of my Orchestral drive, all from FM.

Now I see you're problem...and I envy you. Here we only have one classical radio station, although it's a good one.
Moving on, all the folders describe only one musical piece.
Are they parts that have been sliced from the original file or do they contain the whole performance?
If so, did you duplicate the file if a piece of different category was also performed?

fiogf49gjkf0d Yes, I do slice the files to the separate pieces. You can see it as the files ordered by date and they are groups of 2-4 file of the same orchestra and same conductor. It has advantage that a separate file is mapped to a single composer but listening a selected file it is not feeling of the whole concert. In some cases, not always but only in some cases it is nice to preserve the nature flow of the original concert. Particularly it is useful is a first or a second part of concert has two-3 pieces in program, so the pieces in some case works together… It is exactly what I referred in my "Cut or do to Cut" quandary.
