Since the WHRB broadcasted Victor Herbert First Cello Concerto by Lynn Harrell I got hooked on Herbert. I generally am not big fun of British composers but I do love a lot what Herbert did. It is in a way “light” and not intellectually demanding. Compare to other concertos it sounds more like “salon” concerto but it is still very beautiful….

Among the CDs that I got recently there is one absolutely stunning:

London London 417 672: Academy of St. Martin-in-the-Fields, Neville Marriner, conductor. Lynn Harrell, Cello

Victor Herbert:
Cello Concerto No. 1 in D Major, Op. 8
Cello Concerto No. 2 in E minor, Op. 30
Five Pieces for Cello and Strings

If you never heard the Herbert’s Cello Concerto you might try getting them. I have a few versions by Yo-Yo Ma, Georges Miquelle and James Kreger but the recent discovery of Lynn Harrell and Marriner sound very “mutually” – beautiful music and the truly beautiful play….

This morning, while driving to work, the Classical station was playing the first movement of Gerald Finzi's Cello Concerto (14 July 1901 - 27 September 1956):

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Cello Concerto in A minor, Op 40, was composed by Gerald Finzi in 1955.

The piece is in three movements:

I. Allegro moderatoII. Andante quietoIII. Rondo: Adagio - Allegro giocoso

The concerto was written as the result of a request by John Barbirolli, and first performed by Barbirolli and the Hallé Orchestra, with Christopher Bunting as the soloist at the Cheltenham Music Festival on 19th July, 1955.

I sounded quite interesting but I was unable to catch the interpreter's name.

Best,
Tuga

Today on WFMT's New Releases program, Lisa Flynn played a live recording of Elliott Carter's Cello Concerto.
Composed in 2001, this performance I believe is from the fall of 2012.
Daniel Barenboim conducts the Berlin Staatskapelle Orchestra,
and they sounded great supporting the young soloist Alisa Weilerstein.
I heard her in a recital here in Chicago a few months ago, and liked her playing quite a lot.
