I recently become expectedly infatuated with a great contemporary conductor: Myung-Whun Chung. Myung-Whun Chung was born in 50s and he is a well-accomplished pianist. He started his conducting under Giulini’s wing and as a guest conductor have lead most of the top-ranking today’s orchestras: Royal Philharmonic, London Philharmonic and London Symphony, ORTF Philharmonic, Philadelphia and New York Philharmonics, Philharmonia Orchestra, Berlin and Vienna Philharmonic, Boston and Chicago Symphonies, Metropolitan Opera, Concertgebouw and many others. Currently Myung-Whun Chung is a musical direction of the Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France.

I would have a difficulty to suggest any single performance of Myung-Whun Chung as I feel that any of them worth attention and respect. In particularly pay attention what he did with Opera Bastille Orchestra.

and thanks for one of my favorite audio/music websites.

Regarding Chung, he is also one of my current favorites and I am lucky enough to live in France where he is conducting quite often. He has conducted a Scherezade in 2003 with Orch Radio France which I can highly recommend to you. French musicians are known to be sentimental in their performances, and this piece which is too often conducted with too much bell and whistle is here played with stunning poignancy, clear message(which is chung's strength) and just the right amount of fireworks. Really the ending tugs at you in a way that would make puccini green with envy.

I am listening to Katchen's brahms LP box-set for the moment, but will put on Tebaldi in tosca tonight, thanks for mentioning her passing.

Thanks, Rony, the same good holidays wishings to you.

It was ironic that you mentioned the “Samson et Dracica” in your late email. I have a friend of mine, a local French guy – Jerome, who gave me the Chung’s performance of this opera a few months ago. I was not familiar with this Saint-Saens’ work before, but how wonderful it is!  I really really love it. Is any need to looks for someone else performing the “Samson et Dracica” or the Chung take was it? I personally do not feel I need any better performance but I am not familiar with the historical performance-background of this work.

Romy
