fiogf49gjkf0d We are full time preparing to move to the new place. In a
new house we have 14x24 room that we
call Music Room. It is the place what will be our grand piano, Amy's s Violas,
her music, music stands, lake view fireplace and the rest ordenary suspects. Amy
insisted that she will be dedicating the room. Another days she come to me and
said that it will be my responsibility to make sure that we will have good speakers
and good sound in the Music Room. I reacted as if she proposed a fox to apply
for a job of a chicken guard. Well, the wish of the lovely wife is the
rule and I begin to think what can I do.
I concluded that among many speaker option that I do have none
of them will work out in the Music Room and according to the room layout it
would be very nice to put in there not large corner horns. So, I wondering if I
need to undertake a task to construct some kind of corner-loaded loudspeaker
with 1-3 Tannoy 10" Red drivers, perhaps to fortify it with some kind of build
in direct bass radiator. It is not something that I will take on now, I have
too much on my plate nowadays but it is something that would prospectively design
and commission to a right person to build

fiogf49gjkf0d Good for you, sounds like a fun, no-risk adventure.
So, what's wrong with the Altecs for this? I never had my VOTTs in a room like this, but I've heard them "corner loaded" in rooms this size and they did OK with (then) "big amps", at least by my standards at the time.

fiogf49gjkf0d I have my Cetla 91 that I might use but they are too big and
too demanding. The idea is to have a corner speaker with small footprint and use the enclosure highs do develop bass.
In the room like this bass will be dissipating very dramatically, so I am not sure
that it would be even possible. I for sure will not be build them myself as I might
have more kid-projects but I would not mind to design them and let somebody else
to cut the wood. I would need to fine a fine carpenter as I would need to do a
lot of building: shelving, some custom cabinets, extension for LF for listening
room and etc...Hopefully they exist in the town I move in. The town is kind of freaky
no gas station, no restaurants, no commercial properties of any kind. So, I
hope I find some retired guy with tools basemen and good building skills.

fiogf49gjkf0d I dont think a standart klipschorn would satisfy the cat. I had one, then I heavily modified it and in the end I built my full scale horn system. I still keep that modded khorn system as a second system.
If I may suggest, if you use klipschorn, you can build a better midrange horn, like a tractrix horn with a cf of 200hz. A better midrange driver that can be crossed around 300-350hz.
Unless you go active and have delay for the midrange and the tweeter, the basshorn will not be time aligned. So it is better to have midrange work down to 300hz than the standart 500hz (as far as my ears could tell). On the plus side, the khorn bass, if khorn are properly set up is a really nice bass experience. If you choose to go active, and delay the rest of the system to the bass, I still suggest taking the midrange approach (changing the horn and the driver, lowering the freq)
A time aligned tweeter on top, you can use your ribbons but they should be crossed much lower than you were used to. (I had the fostex t500amk2 work down to 6400hz). You will also need a better (more suited) crossover for this operation. The volti audio khorn crossover is good and is adjustable.
I would also suggest, changing where you put the speakers. Khorns will sound better if you put the other one where the piano is situated. They really love the long wall approach.

for sure the stock Khorn are not that interesting. the midrange horn is freaking honky. a tractrix horn for midrange is much better that the stock K400 horn as you mentioned.

fiogf49gjkf0d How do you even time align a Klipschhorn to any other driver? This is one of Romys axioms and I see no solution with folded horns. I am surprised that it was even mentioned!
