A visitor sent me email “Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery” with a link to (I presume Australian company http://www.goldstandardaudio.com ) that does this:
A works in development.
2.4m high,
for Vitavox S2's and Fane 8M
450Hz Solid Walnut Le Cleac'h
Fostex Supertweeter (Walnut horn)
250Hz Tractix Solid Walnut with Le Cleac'h style roll back
110Hz Tractrix with rollback, stained Birch Ply, adjustable rear chamber.
On aluminium extrusion framework, with almost infinite adjustment and some strong castors to move the whole thing.
Well, I less case about imitation, the whole idea was to share my Macondo finding and to let people to capitalize upon what I have learned. However, some of the things that this Australian guy does I feel is not good and I would like to pass my criticism. I do not know who he is and I for sure would like do not discourage him. Nevertheless, some of the things are expose themselves only also with prolong use. I do have this experience and I think my comments will be valuable. The comments are purely subjective.
1)I do see SOME sonic rational to make 450Hz horn Le Cleac'h but lower horns to do Tractix. To add the Le Cleac'h style roll back to 250Hz Tractix is not nessesary. There are however two disadvantages. The whole stack of the horns with La Horns is less compact. The AU guy estimated that his assemble will be 2.4M. Well, Macondo is 1.8m (without injection). So, the minimum integration distance of the AU assembly will be way over 10-12 feet vs. the Macondo the can from 7 feet! If the AU guys want to have it as commercial product then he in my view substantially limits the usability of products. Another thing is that the horns stuck of the different profiles do look not so attractive.
2)The front legs of the frame. It is very unpleasant and I for sure do not want to see any hardware around the upper bass horn. Sitting in front of the horns and seeing the “horn’s underwear” is something that I would certainly avoid. This about a beautiful dressed woman in her evening dress and who has her bra’s stripes showing over her shoulders. It might not be a criminal offence but if you are a costume designer then you would not do it intentionally, particularly if it would be the only dress she wears….
3)The 3-poll frame is fine BUT it is a bit too industrial in my view. Do consider the Macondo-style mono poll behind with horns held by arms, this fives a very slick “flying appear”.

fiogf49gjkf0d I had a look at the website and the AU stands for gold (from the periodic table) not Australia. Plus the prices are in pounds not dollars.
Interesting turning them in walnut though and I agree totally about the "horns underwear" and industrial three point frame.
Romy, did you ever try the Fostex supertweeter? Perhaps they need the extra height in the frame as room for the tweeter to disperse properly.

fiogf49gjkf0d Hm, good point. They indeed might
be from UK. Anyhow, I did have Fostex super tweeters. I think one the cheapest
(wish was the best) and one second from their best. My experience with them irrelevant
as it was long time ago and I because I used at that time a different MF driver.

I did not know Louis was going to contact you about these horns without telling me about it in the first place! I wanted to wait for him to build some of these horns first before posting about them.
The 115Hz horns and Frames were meant to be ready in April. The rings have been cut using CNC and Louis says that the first sections are on the lathe.
So I should not have long to wait now I hope.
Anthony, and yes, you are right about Louis Eastman (owner of Studio AU) being based in the UK. It made sense to commission the horns from someone in the UK as these will be used here. Are you in the UK/Europe yourself? It would be great if you could e-mail me as I would like to discuss with someone on a similar journey who is fairly "local" to me.
Best regards Rakesh

...or Europe...or even the same hemisphere. I am a long way from "everywhere" here in Australia, probably as far from the UK as you could possibly get.
Cheers,

fiogf49gjkf0d Some correction to above info by Louis.
Vertical height of system once complete (in this room) will be around 1.8m. That is 115Hz (98cm) + 400Hz(29cm) + Fostex (10cm) + 250Hz (44cm) + some spacing=1.81m
Frame height will be also significantly less than indicated by Louis.

fiogf49gjkf0d These pics (only ones I have) were sent to me last month when Louis was waiting for the lathe to be ready (which it is now). They give an idea of construction technique used.
