Steinway speakers?  Why not!   Another long-established piano manufacturer, Bosendorfer, are actually making their own speakers that pretend to be pianos - they have resonating boards attached to their sides!

You might imagine that extra resonance deliberately added to the sound would make them sound blurred and coloured.   And you would be correct!  I heard them at the London Heathrow Hifi Show last week - Yuk !

They have had some good reviews though .....

Sure, I would have nothing against companies that have sasses how to manufacture musical instruments trying to look at loudspeaker market, I would only applaud it. After all, a properly sounding loudspeaker is a very complicated musical instrument…. Who, knows, then perhaps that mystery of the “Resonating Oops” might be resolved at more manageable level:

However, with my experience-skeptical view the objectives of the industry I do not feel that they will use thier musical instrument know-now to archive more noble audio results but rather they would have much more sinister intentions and the results. It looks to me like the Lyngdorf using the Steinway name recognition will inject to the market another crap of the Dynaudio Evidence level, though Lyngdorf uses way more better sounding SS drivers (and aluminum baffles… ehhh!). I have very bad feeling about it as those “signs” as the results those companies are not targeted not aimed to the sonic connoisseurs but rather to the people who demand a sales person dressed in $2K suite, speaking with a light touch of the “european” assent and having a “Robb Report” sticking out of his pocket. 

Another subject is price.  No, I am not against the high price – in fact I feel it was VERY right move on their part to set the price tag above $150K. With the marketing snobbyty that will be imposed by the Lyngdorf sale personnel it would not be able to sell those things for $50K. The higher price (in obsolete term) is very fine but the relation between the price and what Lyngdorf offer is very strange. As I know the industry the $150K buys nothing at that delivery level. The package that Lyngdorf plan to offer is too large for the asked trice tag. For the $150K Lyngdorf will give a large integrated, considering sensitivity of the drivers it must be powerful amplifier/CD player and two set of loudspeaker. That high gloss finishing is incredibly expansive to manufacture and to support. So, it lives practically no room for any R&D or serious implementation efforts (particularly after paying off to Steinway). As the result I would anticipate that Lyngdorf juts repackaged their former “Glossy White Trash Sound” solutions into a new expensive frame and it was it.  I certainly never heard them but…. I remember I was visiting a few installations of NY’s stock brokers and I remember their sound…  Those people would not mint to pay extra $100K to put Steinway label on the sonic misery that they have accomplished in their listening rooms…

Wait, I remember one guy among them used external DA converter in his playback. I need to call him and to inform him that if he slave his CD transport and his DAC from an externals atomic master word-clock TTL signal then he would have much less ditter and much more respect form his friends. Oh, did he know that Rolex just introduce a new line of those word-clock oscillators….

I dipole speaker with a digital room correction. Predictable?  Of cause the literature that the industry pimps are spreading is predictable as well.

The funniest in the “literature” that Morons are spreading (and that Lyngdorf is perpetrating) is the live vs. recorded test:

“When the Steinway Lyngdorf System D was ready for its first unveiling in Moscow, the stage hosted five Model D Steinway grands. At the sides were the loudspeakers, in the front seats was the full management of Steinway & Sons. Ten talented young pianists opened the concert with quattre main works. The second part of the score was played above the keys where the electronics of Model D playback took over. Nobody in the audience noticed the playback half or in this case the hand sync until the pianists gave a show of hands whilst the music continued. That's when the Steinway Lyngdorf system received a standing ovation from those present. When Peter recounted this anecdote a twinkle appeared in his eyes.”

I was reading it and laughed. Probably Steinway company instead of sponsoring the charlatans needs to re-learn how to male better pianos….

BTW, I need to add is that what Lyngdorf does is not only similar in simplicity and stupidity to what Edison did during selling his Diamond Disks. Not very far time ago other inventors - the Darritan company did the same.
