I have been getting into Bruckner Third lately and Ive been trying to find some decent recordings.  Jochum Berlin version I have is a bit too hurried.  I would prefer something more articulate and with a bit more finesse.  Any suggestions?

JP,

Try the 1990 performance by the Vienna Philharmonic with Bernard Haitink conducting. Its still available new on CD. Sound quality is excellent; interpretation very much to my liking, but that is subjective.

Bruckner - Symphony 3 - Wiener Philharmoniker - Bernard Haitink.jpg

The same performance was later offered along with Bruckner's N° 8 (same orchestra and direction), packaged as a double CD and it too is still available; I have not heard the performance of the 8th under Haitink, but judging by the N° 3 performance, there's every reason to be optomistic. I have a copy of the 1985 performance of Bruckner's 8th by the Vienna Philharmonic under Carlo Maria Giulini; as is often the case when giulini is conducting, I find it excellent (really excellent; sensitive and exuisite). One of these days I'll get my hands on a copy of the Haitink version.

Thanks for the recommendation JD, Ill take a look into it.  I just listened to Wand's play of the 3rd with Cologne Radio and it is quite good! Pretty much what I was looking for.  Its packaged in a set so I think this is really the only way to listen to it.

I did not comment in this thread as I did not particularly appreciate Symphony No.3 (or Symphony No.6 at that matter). I always feel that the Third symphony is kind of too much “pop” symphony.  It turned out that I just did not hear it properly performed.  During the last week  John Berky’s Brucknerathon I heard the Hans Zender playing it live with SWR Symphony Orchestra. That was one of those “Holly Cow!!!” performances and it was VERY different Third from anything else that that I heard. Move to dumpster pretty much any Bruckner Third that you have and get the Hans Zender version. As far as I understand John Berky is the only person from whom it is possible to get.  John runs site www.abruckner.com and it shell be his contact information in there…. It is not doing to be SACD but it will be much better – it will be recording of live FM event and in addition it will be a stunning take of the Bruckner Third.

Thanks, Nic I did not know this one.  A gentleman from Brucknerathon meeting compiled a list performances of Anton Bruckner’s Music in the United States and Canada for the Concert Season of 2011-2012
