Nasa discovered a new bacterium that substitutes arsenic for phosphorus in it's biochemistry, which literally changes what scientists think life is capable of being.
I was here near the beginning and didn't stay too long as my motivations in audio are more philosophic-poetic than philosophic-scientific. About a week ago I returned and have read a good deal of what went on since I left six years ago and am glad that the depth of the pursuit has been matched by the length of it.
Anyway I think that Nasa could find an interesting parallel to their discovery in biology here.
So I have been rearranging my main audio system according to the GoodSoundClub tenets expressed here and I'm noting fine poetic implications. Lower electro-mechanical distortion is well known to be angelic and DPoLS is wicked stuff. I will be pursuing it when the main system moves from it's current test bed of lower excursion to the future test bed of DPoLS.

Here is the set up working on trying to lower mechanical excursion w/o using large horns:

5 way system. Crossover points are 40, 100, 750, 7500  the vertical JBL array 1400 mid horns have a horn tweeter built into their top. Yes the 15-40 Hz channel are converted wine barrels, sealed with 15"woofers on each end. The 4 x 8" woofer tower 40-100 Hz channel is also sealed cabinet. the 100-800 Hz channel is 15" woofer ported but the port is taken out by the 100 Hz crossover point. It is what it is.

Wine barrel woofers win the aesthetic prize of 2010 irrespective of sound. Come to think of it, this room looks has the feel/lighting of typical wineries in Jerez (Spain). Do you have some details on how you approached the barrel project from a design and system perspective?

I needed 20Hz - 50 Hz in a large 7 meter x 6 meter x 15 meter room, and I wanted a sealed design. I have wine barrels laying around and fortunately the internal 4 cu ft of a wine barrel is perfect for 2 x 15 inch woofers in a sealed system. The barrels interiors were coated with a acoustic substance and four long one inch threaded rods (see the silver ends) hold the barrel ends together under the stresses of the woofers action. They work superbly with just a 500 watt plate amp on each barrel.

Steve, you know me. If it were up to me and I would need to convert you room into my room ten I would starts with divorce, as anything following has little compliance with married status.

Then I would add a few more barrel-woofers, I would say 4 or 6 per channel and would locate them in vertical arrangement. For coming wine customers I would explain that the barrel-woofers are self-filtering using gravity flow but in reality I would go for cylindrical wave of line-array.

In the floor I would throw some kind of large rug, to kill the first floor reflection and the horrible echo you most serially have in the room. The entire back wall does not look too sexy neither for audio not for your winery establishment. For audio it too flat and reflective and for winery it feels too new. You need to age the wall somehow, BTW, the organ patter from my brown tubes will do fine. You can put jungle plants between the tubes and throw here and there a few live monkeys. Audio-wise the “jangles” would be a good random reflector. For winery it will work out as well. How the parents would take the kids to the trip to you winery and while the kids chase monkeys you will be able to sell more wine to the parents.

The two large windows in each side to me look like the ready to do mouths of 30Hz horns. Why 30Hz horns? Because I am an idiot and I would like others to suffer. If the suffering will not be enough for you then get rid of that Generac generator and put in there a few APS PurePower devises. Anyhow, you got the picture and you know that I am highly predictable...

In an airplane hanger.

But it doesn't matter this is not the final resting place of this system and is just the easy assembly point for building and testing. The echo for me offers little interference with evaluating these goals.

Once I am happy with the system I will move it to a dedicated space in a house and begin the joyous path of finding the DPoLS's and for that the jungle animals will have been properly banished except for the felines hanging in the savanna trees surveying their distant prey.
