I was “complaining” before that there is some kind of “very beautiful devil” lives in FM radio broadcasts. I can’t figure out why even when they broadcast the recordings from the CDs that I know very well then thier broadcasts impact t more musical then the same CD played at my “reportedly better” CD playback.

Just now the WHRB 95.3 broadcasted the Marc-Andre Hamelin plays of the Scrabin’s Sonata #1. I have this CD, know the peace very well and although I generally like what Hamelin did with it I never hold this performance in any pedestal and I never get form it that “convoluted magic of the Scrabin’s mind”. The WHRB ran the First Sonata right from the CD and for a first time the Hamelin’s Scrabin really “got” me. It was as magical, as complicated, as hypnotizing, as mysterious and as secretive as Scrabin should be…

What the hell going on with the FM and why  the FM  loads so much “contextual pressure” into reproduced music?

Actually, you heard the music off a computer -- into which the CD has been programmed. That's how it works, during the summer.

Hope that helps...

I “kind of knew” it, or at least suspected it.  At this point it is irrelevant “how it works” – even if theY play it form CD then I am sure it some kind of very crappy source. The main question is “why it works”?

Why the music coming through FM chain get fertilized with “spirit”. I know that the FM is not transparent over 16kHz. Perhaps the keys in there and then perhabs I was not too much off:

Yeah, it was really surprising.  The music from your FM was very, very natural and organic (I'm not saying other mediums sounded bad, it was great, but there was more ease and naturalness with FM).  Is FM noise working as some kind of dither?  But you said it wasn't as good with other tuners you had in the past.

It reminded me of my experience some yeas ago at Vegas show.  After days of demoing and visiting other rooms, I came back really tired to my rented Ford Escort one evening, turned on the key, and Sinatra was on the radio.  It felt like I heard a music first time in my entire stay in Vegas!

I dunno if any of this applies to you guys and radio, but by way of analogy, when I had a tv, I might watch (and enjoy) films that I certainly wouldn't bother with if I had to shove a tape of the same into the VCR that evening.

Likewise, I've found myself hanging around places like cafes, shops etc for a bit longer than necessary cos they're playing a song I like, even though at home I probably wouldn't play it for years.

Could it be that relieved of the burden of choice such as offered by a large record collection, that some minor neurotic anxiety disappears, making it easier to enjoy the music? Nice to be able to delegate responsibility for a decision when normally there's no-one around whos judgement you trust....

Just a thought. I do also think that the modulation processes in FM radio and also, tape, may have something to do with it.

I know what you mean, but I think it is a bit different.  With Romy's system, CDs and LPs sound more immediate than FM, but through FM, I perceived music more as a whole.  It's like my brain re-constract an anssemble from each perceived sound of instruments when listening to CD, LP, but with FM, it's more like I perceived an anssemble and instruments are naturally placed in it.  I only listened to some classical piece with FM (orchestral and vocal), so I don't know how I feel if I listened to jazz because I prefer the immediate presence of soloing instrument with jazz.

Do you feel more comfortable in a library, than beside your own shelf of unread books?...

Clark: I think that's a quite different analogy. I've never felt particularly comfortable in libraries at all, nice not to have to edit out noisy semi-non-essential bodily functions etc.

Yoshi: Interesting observations, which to my mind suggest some "smoothing" of sonic edges by the transmission process, a touch of soft focus perhaps?

I recalled Romy's comments regarding remote control and wonder if there's a parallel with my argument there.
